# Goodnight Tango > A blog about Tango... in real life! ## Posts - [Learning for the fun of it](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/06/01/learning-for-the-fun-of-it/): These days I am reading a book called Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. The book starts when something blows up the moon in seven pieces. Soon, people realize that the earth has only about two years left until a meteorite rain that will last for some thousand years will destroy everything on the face of it. […] - [I cannot dance to Pugliese](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/03/23/i-cannot-dance-to-pugliese/): I just can’t hide my geekiness sometimes. When I was writing about bandwidth in the previous post about presence, I was not referring to the actual network bandwidth. I was referring to a different kind of bandwidth… the human communication bandwidth. If you suppose that people are computers and they communicate with each other through […] - [The peripheral](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/03/23/the-peripheral/): It was a long time since I read one of William Gibson’s books, a writer that I follow for a long time and one of the most visionaries in the cyberpunk genre. I just finished yesterday one of his latest books with the title “The peripheral”. In this book, he is writing about a reality, […] - [Adios Buenos Aires](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/02/09/adios-buenos-aires/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango is about leaving Buenos Aires and it is inspired by the news from two very good tango friends. Our lives are like a journey and as Kavafis writes in his poem “As you set out for Ithaka hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery”. When you […] - [Describing music](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/02/04/describing-music/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango has only a guitar and a bandoneon… two instruments… nothing more! The sound is not like what you hear in typical milonga hits but it triggered one really strange observation that I’d like to share. When we describe things that we experience with our senses (vision, taste, hear, smell or touch) there […] - [How are you?](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/01/09/how-are-you/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango is something I meant to write for some time now. It’s been some weeks now that I have seen a couple of very interesting videos and documentaries. The recent events in the USA are somehow explained (or even better predicted) in them even before they happened. So, I wanted to start with […] - [2020… what a year?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/12/30/2020-what-a-year/): WOW! What a year! If there is one thing that you do every year around this time is to look back on what happened in your life in the year that is ending and dream about the new one that comes. Well, I think that for most of us, the dreams for 2020 were quite […] - [A dance to share your sorrow or happiness](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/12/11/a-dance-to-share-your-sorrow-or-happiness/): One could say that tango is mostly a genre of sad music. Not that there are no happy and funny tangos but most of the tangos are talking about lost loves, immigrants and their roots, deaths, the nostalgia of their homeland, etc. Most of them feel sad. In greek, there is a saying that I […] - [Sur: one word, many meanings](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/11/26/sur-one-word-many-meanings/): In my previous post, I wrote about patterns within and among languages. Yesterday, it was another great Tango By Year night traveling back to 1948. So… here is an example of how specific words in specific contexts can mean a lot more than what you can find in a dictionary…. and when you use them […] - [Is music always female?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/11/24/is-music-always-female/): As you probably know it’s been a few months that I have been taking German lessons. In German as well as in other languages nouns and therefore abstract notions have a gender (I think, English is excluded because everything is neutral unless there is an explicit gender assigned usually by nature). One of the most […] - [The bucket list](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/11/20/the-bucket-list/): In my free time sometimes I get to YouTube and just watch different videos that get my attention. From tango performances… to psychology advice, new gadget reviews, ted talks, etc. Today, I saw a video about bucket lists. Things that you would like to do before you die. The guy in the video said something […] - [Revival](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/11/19/revival/): It was the 5th of April this year… we were already a couple of weeks into lockdown and I felt like posting a tango as a goodnight to my friends. Since then, it started becoming more like a habit… It helped me feel close to all of you, although we might be far. It helped […] - [Better days are coming](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/11/12/better-days-are-coming/): Tonight it was the time to explore 1934 in the Tango By Year zoom-show… (whoever doesn’t already know about it… GO CHECK IT OUT NOW!) and there is one song that I picked up for its lyrics. The title can be loosely translated to “better days are coming” and it’s a song written after the […] - [Why you?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/06/07/why-you/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… is about her… or as the title says… “you”. I wrote many days ago about the first time you dance with someone. In that post, I focused on what happens after you start dancing. But in this post, I would like to focus on what happened before. How do you select and […] - [The secret](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/06/06/the-secret/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is about a secret! You probably watch other couples dancing when you sit out a tanda. What do you see? For one specific song… for a specific part of it…. you will see as many possibilities (of steps) as the couples on the floor. We all take classes from teachers and many […] - [No mistakes in the tango, darling, not like life](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/06/05/no-mistakes-in-the-tango-darling-not-like-life/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… came to me as an idea for this post… completely by accident. I wanted to write about mistakes… yes… this thing that we think we do when we dance and we immediately “sorry” our partner. So I Googled “tango about mistakes” and guess what came up as the first result! The famous […] - [Together](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/31/together/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is talking about one… one person looking for this one person who stole his heart. During all these days in my posts, I have received comments from people I met from many different places. In some cases, people who never knew each other before just started exchanging comments and opinions. People who […] - [Hurricane](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/29/hurricane/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango…doesn’t need any introductions! As I already wrote, I am fascinated by how our minds work especially in terms of memories. I believe many of you have had a similar experience. It starts slowly… like a hurricane… without a notice… you just started dancing with someone for the first time… you ask for […] - [Is there still romance?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/29/is-there-still-romance/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is about a rebellion! I was in this “Tango by year” radio-meeting-show yesterday and someone in between other messages in the chat wrote… “Where is the romance (in our days)?”. It made me think… in between social media.. busy lives… so many other ways of connecting… and so much noise in general… […] - [The cabeceo that I never understood](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/27/the-cabeceo-that-i-never-understood/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… is a milonga, because the story that follows happened at the beginning of a milonga tanda. It was at a marathon. We have danced a few hours ago and she was now sitting behind another lady I wanted to invite. I made a couple of attempts but not really successful… and suddenly […] - [Presuppositions and reality](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/26/presuppositions-and-reality/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… talks about an endless search for this one love! Having said enough about my fears in the previous posts I will try tonight to go on the other side. I recently saw a very interesting discussion with Sabrina Veliz, Milena Plebs, and Noelia Hurtado. Among the different things they mentioned… the discussion […] - [Black eyes](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/19/black-eyes/): Goodnight Tango… is about a pair of black eyes! The first time I heard the song in a milonga I was dancing and I was so surprised that I almost thought it was a cortina. I knew the famous Russian song and the melody rang so many bells in my head that I was kind […] - [The singer who speaks](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/18/the-singer-who-speaks/): Tonight’s good night tango… is the same as yesterday. Ha… you didn’t see that coming? The idea came after the discussion yesterday night about the lyrics of the song. Before posting the song yesterday, I found and heard this version from Goyeneche, so the discussion about the lyrics made me think about the differences between […] - [Rediscovering music](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/17/rediscovering-music/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is a song that you have to hear quite a lot of times. Every time you listen to it (if you haven’t already listened to it hundreds of times)… you’ll discover something different…. something new… a detail you missed. One of the things I still remember my tango teacher shouting at us […] - [Tango and dementia](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/15/tango-and-dementia/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… continues on the theme of memory from last night, but this time on the other side… oblivion! One of the things that I remember from these years of the research project is the nurses telling us that in order to minimize the risk of dementia one must be active physically, mentally, and […] - [Tribute to DJs](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/13/tribute-to-djs/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… comes after a request from a friend who sometimes acts as a Tango DJ. It also comes with a performance just because some of my non-tango friends need to understand that this IS tango… it is danceable… and yes… we DO dance it! It was only a few months ago in the […] - [Addictive evolution](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/12/addictive-evolution/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is an all-time favorite but a little bit changed… kind of evolved… and based on yesterday night’s post and the discussions I was inspired for this post. It was after the end of a milonga in a U-Bahn returning home together with a couple of other dancers and somehow in the discussion… […] - [Why is Tango addictive?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/11/why-is-tango-addictive/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is about a bad habit…an addiction. We all know where I am going with it. Right? Yes… Obviously tango for many if not all of us is very close to being an addiction. But what is it that makes it so addictive? Many of you might answer the embrace, the music, the […] - [The last tanda](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/10/the-last-tanda/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is about the last tango. Last night I wrote about the first tanda… so I thought today to write about the last one. You probably know the feeling, when you are in a milonga and you just want to dance this one “last” tanda with a specific partner (preferably also with specific […] - [Hugo Diaz and his magic](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/09/hugo-diaz-and-his-magic/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… comes from a very special musician… and it’s dedicated to his magical instrument. The emotions expressed in this particular song… without a single word spoken… just from this one small instrument… are simply amazing! Tango for me has this element of magic and one of the most magical moments to me is […] - [GOOOOOAL!!!](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/08/goooooal/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is called “Racing club”… and I think connects very well with my thoughts tonight. I have recently seen an interview with Horacio Godoy and towards the end, he was explaining that for a milonguero landing a successful cabeceo was a big deal! He was playing against all the other leaders in the […] - [Action and reaction](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/05/action-and-reaction/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is from a guy who is suffering from her silence for three years. Much like how we all suffer from the lack of dancing (hopefully it won’t be for three years) The selection of the orchestra was inspired by your comments on yesterday’s post. Action and reaction… question and response… a discussion… […] - [The time of masks](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/04/the-time-of-masks/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… is talking about the singer’s pain that must be hidden to entertain us. He says that he must wear a “mask” like a clown in order to hide his true feelings. Since it is the time of masks in general… I was thinking how easy is it to hide your emotions… your […] - [The aroma of an embrace](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/03/the-aroma-of-an-embrace/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… is all about tango! She almost came to my face and I couldn’t avoid the cabeceo to her. It was the first time I danced with her and there are two things that made an impression. The first one, she was a bit sweaty… not a very pleasant smell… and the second, […] - [Taking risks](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/05/01/taking-risks/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… is actually a milonga that says that there is no country like mine (meaning Argentina obviously). There is also no better and more enjoyable way to introduce yourself to a dancer (whom you have not danced before) than a milonga tanda. I have tried that a few times and the best line […] - [Wait for it](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/04/29/wait-for-it/): Tonight’s goodnight tango… is coming a bit late. So I thought to post a good morning tango instead. The dry sound from the plunking of the double base chords in 1.58 is really unique. You know the feeling… you wait for it… you long for it… you are listening to the whole song for it… […] - [The first cabeceo](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/03/24/the-first-cabeceo/): Today’s goodnight tango… is about a little student girl. As I wrote yesterday, for me it was inconceivable to cabeceo. Not to mention to a follower I didn’t know. So, in the first milongas I went, I was sitting in my place dancing maybe one or two tandas. Always, with classmates that knew from the […] - [Embracing again](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/03/22/embracing-again/): Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything about the first coffee because today was my first time out for a coffee after the quarantine. I was observing the people around us and it is obvious the fact that everyone still tries to avoid gestures like shaking hands with someone when you meet (hugs were out of the […] - [What is art?](https://goodnighttango.com/2020/03/18/what-is-art/): Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… comes from the “Señor del Tango”. What is art? Is it only a painting by a famous painter?… a song by a musician recorded somehow?… a book?… a poem?… a dance performance that we see in a theater or on a YouTube video? Of course, all of them and many more are […] - [Tango advertising](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/07/31/tango-advertising/): A couple of posts ago I was writing about the definition of Tango professionals and how it is difficult to rate professionals and more specifically teachers in Tango since the customers in the market don't have clear and common expectations. Although, as it was pointed out in some comments, rating teachers who are also artists at the same time is a very slippery slope and it shouldn't be the case most of us agree that expectations of what Tango is to each one of us personally change radically during our tango journey. This means that you might end up changing your mind about previous teachers (for better or for worse) the more you experience learning from different teachers. Therefore it is really difficult to have an objective kind of comparison metric... a kind of rating of professionals in Tango. - [The benefits of limitations](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/07/24/limitations-creativity-and-adaptability/): A couple of posts ago I wrote about my limitations in vocabulary and how I don't see them as actual limitations since I invested in expanding the other parameters of communication. The main point is that vocabulary is only a small part of our communication both in normal spoken languages as well as in dancing. So apart from investing time in developing your vocabulary you can always improve your dance by improving the rest of the communication elements. Here I will continue with a couple of benefits I see that I gained from forcing this limitation on myself. - [The Tango market problem](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/07/17/the-tango-market-problem/): Where does all this leave us? Can we rate Tango teachers like any other professional out there? Can we say who is a good Tango teacher? The question can be answered when the customers have clear expectations. But is this the case? Do we even know why we start Tango? Is it the same reason why we continue and stick with it? What are our expectations and values in the beginning and what are they after 3 or 4 years? And then again how much influence do our teachers have in these expectations? - [The limited vocabulary problem](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/07/10/are-limitations-good-or-bad/): Linguists support that a person needs about 800 words for a basic conversation and 8000 in order to reach a native speaker level. In addition, Albert Mechrabian who was a psychologist at the University of California in Los Angeles suggested in his research that around 7% of our communication happens based on the actual language we use. The rest 55% is based on our body language and the 38% is based on our voice (e.g. our tone, speed volume, etc.). What do all these tell us? It is not what you say that matters most. It is how you say it. That is why I don't see limiting my vocabulary as a necessarily bad thing. - [Professional hobbyist (snob?) teachers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/07/03/professional-hobyist-snob-teacher/): It is very rewarding and a bliss to make work on something that started as a hobby. However from the time your hobby becomes your full time job, you get paid for it and you make a living it is getting harder and harder to see it again as a hobby. Therefore it is harder and harder for teachers who teach years to dance socially in a milonga. Most of them started teaching because Tango was their hobby. Slowly it evolved into a profession, a job, a way of making money and living out of it. This is when the hobby stopped being a hobby and became a job. This is probably when they started dancing less and less in milongas. - [Fear of creation](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/06/26/fear-of-creation/): Every creation needs to face the world we live in. It's a new object that needs to get out there and be seen... judged... accepted and rejected. For the creator this creation this new thing coming to life... in the real world... Is like a child. And like any parent we are hurt when it will not be accepted or if it is ridiculed, mocked etc. It is after all a reflection of ourselves and we cannot distance ourselves from it. Any bad comment can become personal and can reach our heart. Therefore it is very natural to feel afraid when giving birth and presentng it to the world as you would feel afraid if your child gets hurt. It is one of the strongest bonds. - [The complexity of simple](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/06/19/the-complexity-of-simple/): Most of us think in very basic combinations and patterns. We have learned, practiced and memorized just a number of them and use them in our dance. But the possibilities out there are endless to be able to dance each and every song in our life in a completely unique way even just by simply using the walk. Somehow however we still search for the new fancy move, how to make the perfect colgada or ganchos or whatever else we see out there. Like we have already mastered all those possible 1 million combinations. Why?... Because the walk is not shiny enough. It doesn't attract attention! - [Teachers with skin in the game](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/06/12/teachers-with-skin-in-the-game/): A few weeks ago I was writing about event organizers who have skin in the game. Organizers who organize events with the main goal for them to have fun in the first place. They organize events where they can dance their asses off in the first place. Like chefs who eat the meals they cook. After dancing my latest tanda with the teacher I mentioned before, I realized that apart from organizers there are also teachers who have this same attitude. They get their skin in the game. They eat the food they just cooked. They dance with the students they just taught. - [Are you reading or are you dancing?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/06/05/the-most-valuable-currency/): We are trained to keep our attention focused on another person (often a stranger) for about 10 minutes that a tanda lasts. Whoever dances without focusing on their partners is probably dancing something else...  not Tango. So why not be able to focus ourselves on a text (often from a stranger) for half the time especially when it has to do with our passion? Right? It shouldn't be that hard... - [Opening sequence](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/05/29/opening-scenes/): The common pattern in all the previous stories is that the mood and emotion of the tanda is set right from the first moments of it. If the Mirada is a teaser trailer of a movie then the first few seconds of the embrace, the way it is formed, the time it takes, the shape it takes are all parts of the opening sequence of the movie. They are one of the most important moments in the whole tanda. They can inspire you, let you down, lift you up or just let you indifferent. Everything can happen in those few seconds. - [Traditions vs evolution](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/05/22/traditions-vs-evolution/): For better or for worse societies evolve. In all different places, time brings changes. In some places quicker than others... in some places different than others... but all in all the world is evolving. Tango is part of this evolving world and obviously cannot stay uninfluenced by the changes happening in it. Therefore, it is inevitable that in cultures and societies where the role of women has evolved, Tango will also follow up. - [Chefs and event organizers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/05/15/chefs-and-organizers/): Skin in the game is a principle that says when you trust someone else to do a job for you then it is much better if this someone is also exposed to the risks of not doing the job properly. If the chef and cooks don't cook well they risk poisoning or not enjoying their meal. If a banker has their money on their own bank they risk losing them if they take wrong decisions. If politicians are not affected by a decision they make they don't care about causing damage to other people. - [What can Pugliese's music teach you about life](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/05/08/what-can-puglieses-music-teach-you-about-life/): In the case of the dialog and fight communities, the dialog communities have found the tool to find the way out of it. They discovered their "god from the machine" but they did not let him solve the problem alone. They moved their hand too... they took action... talked... discussed... compromised and reached the necessary release. In communities where the drama, the fights, and the tension continue and always build up, without any releases, without any exits, it is inevitable that something will break. And this is the community. People will start abandoning the community and in the end, it will not even be a community anymore. - [Dialog vs fight](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/05/01/dialog-vs-fight/): Tango is also a social dance and being social means that it needs to integrate differences. It includes people from different cultures, backgrounds, nationalities, styles, etc., and brings them all together in its embrace. Its history is full of differences and disagreements between styles, orchestras, generations, etc. Being social means that inevitably there will be disagreements within your community. But if we can take a lesson from the dance we love is that we should always discuss, negotiate, express ourselves honestly, respect, and accept each other. - [Rules, risks and returns in Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/04/24/rules-risks-and-returns-in-tango/): Did you spot the pattern? Three classic rules broken, three different results, three different gains. But is there something in common between them? Yes. The pleasure from the tanda. Either expressed verbally, with a smile or with a non breaking embrace or in any other way... These are the moments we are looking for when we dance. - [What if you had the perfect partner?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/04/17/what-if-you-had-the-perfect-partner/): Applications could vary from the very usual Tango teacher who would be able to explain and teach the necessary body mechanics needed for the dance to the equivalent of Taxi dancers. The question is if we as humans would accept them and up to which point? - [Could Tango DJs become obsolete?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/04/10/could-tango-djs-become-obsolete/): Believe it or not... this is what I see as an advantage in this case. I mean, human artists consume a fraction of that input, but mostly they do so intentionally. They know what they want to read, look at, and listen to because they have a formed opinion and a taste. - [Tango Idoru](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/04/03/tango-idoru/): So let's assume you have software that can write this emotional music that touches you. Would it be enough to have a computer on stage hit the play button and let it play "live"? Would that constitute a live performance? Would you consider this software as an artist? I guess not. - [Access and value of music in the age of AI](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/03/27/access-and-value-of-music-in-the-age-of-ai/): So what will this mean for the value of music? Will we still appreciate it as much? Will we still appreciate artists as much? Will the even bigger abundance of music create even bigger chaos in the music industry? - [How would you react to AI music?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/03/20/ai-art/): So how can you "protect" yourself from AI art?... and in the end... does it really matter? Do you really want to avoid, or protect yourself from such art? - [Mixed Tangos](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/03/13/mixed-tangos/): What does it mean for me the fact that the loud Greek way of dancing Tango feels strange and alien to me? Am I infected so much by the German or northern European way of dancing?  Am I becoming more of a German even in my dance? Or maybe wasn't I ever so much Greek? - [Is it really your own story?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/02/27/is-it-really-your-own-story/): Then whose story is this in the end? Is it the story you had in mind to tell in the beginning? Is it the story your partner wanted to listen to? Is it the story they wanted to tell you? - [How do you tell a story?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/02/20/how-do-you-tell-a-story-good/): What can we learn from TTS software, ebook reading apps, and so many other communication experiences? If the voice has its tools to communicate emotions what are the equivalent tools in our dance? - [What story are you telling?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/02/13/what-story-are-you-telling/): "I now understand how important it is to listen to a lot of music." A good friend (follower) told me recently. She explained that when she knows the song she feels more confident and natural for her to also contribute to the dance. - [Dancers or story tellers?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/02/06/dancers-or-story-tellers/): Dancers with basic musicality can understand and express the music they hear at any given moment. However, if you really want to go a step further you need to see the song as a complete entity, as a story that tells you something, that has a key message. - [Is social tango good for shows?](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/01/23/is-social-tango-good-for-shows/): So given this contradiction, I was asking myself if social tango is good enough for performances. I mean how much would people be interested in looking at couples dancing with simple steps, without big colgadas, back sacadas, complex ganchos, and all kinds of fancy moves? - [Connection](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/01/16/connection/): This... the ability to sense your partner's body within your chest, your core, your own body and eventually feel it as if it is part of your own body, is maybe the answer to the incompleteness of the previous post which satisfies our deep need for connection. - [Flawed](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/01/09/flawed/): We are all flawed, incomplete peripherals, and the irony of the dance is exactly that. You need two to dance it but you will never experience it in its entirety. You can never understand the dance in its entirety. - [Incomplete](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/01/02/incomplete/): If you ever really grasp this... you can understand that there is no leading and following in Tango. There was never such a thing... not even from its beginning. There is only cooperation... partnership... like in a family... in a couple... from the age of cavemen till today... where the man hunted and the woman guarded his back... where we need each other to survive... where we need each other to dance. - [Recuerdo](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/12/26/recuerdo/): So here we are. One more year in our tango lives. Full of new experiences, embraces, tandas, music, dance, posts, changes, and most of all memories. Memories that without all of you who read, reacted, commented, and discussed these posts would not be there. - [Focus](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/12/19/focus/): So please... focus your conversations (dance) and don't try to talk about everything in those 2 or 3 minutes! It is not possible! - [Tango porn](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/12/12/tango-porn/): Tango performances are in many cases designed to impress, much like porn videos. They are both shows. The partners even when they improvise, have a considerable amount of training between them to know very well each other to be able to perform complex moves. - [Trembling](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/12/05/trembling/): Are you trembling?" She asked me. "No..." I said... but I knew I was. It was one of my first times in a milonga. I knew her because we were taking classes together... she was already more experienced than me and of course, I was a bit anxious. - [Are there mistakes in Tango?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/11/28/are-there-mistakes-in-tango/): So this is why Al Pacino's phrase actually makes sense. It is a matter of perspective. Once you change it, you realize how different can your and your partner's experience become. - [Hooked](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/11/21/hooked/): Tango as a social dance is really another social network. So, what is the investment you build in this network? Your reputation. Everyone wants to be a prominent member... a dancer that attracts others to dance... a dancer who almost always enjoys their tandas. - [Returns and departures.](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/11/14/returns-and-departures/): All I know is that in this life... you end up getting what you give. So I try to give what I want to get. I try to give without second thoughts, without judgments, and without expectation for a return. I try to give even if sometimes... giving isn't so enjoyable for me. - [Some like it hot!](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/11/07/some-like-it-hot/): So as an organizer, you can make a decision. Do I want to create a cool or a hot event? If you know you can control the number of cool kids or connectors and accept them. - [Silence is golden](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/10/31/silence-is-golden/): Sometimes, people are dancing on a role and never even realized that they can do what the opposite role does. I was always baffled by this. I still am... but a bit less than before. How could my partner talk to me? - [Engineering and Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/10/24/engineering-and-tango/): If you give the same problem to a number of engineers it is possible to get different solutions,  each carrying something from the personality and the background of each person. Of course, there are specific patterns to be followed but again, there is plenty of room for improvisation. - [Is musicality female?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/10/17/is-musicality-female/): Somehow there is a common misconception that the woman needs to just be good at understanding and executing the "commands" of the man. Musicality seems to come a bit later as an interest for ladies/followers. That maybe explains the phenomenon but then... isn't this maybe the mirror of the leaders' trap of wanting to learn more and more sequences and steps because that's what they think that the women want? - [The butterfly effect](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/10/10/the-butterfly-effect/): So here you go... the same song... the same melody... and just a tiny detail of a few milliseconds and you get a totally different piece altogether. A few milliseconds on your step and an enormous amount of satisfaction and joy when you make it plus a whole new sensation from the song. - [A challenge for teachers](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/10/03/a-challenge-for-teachers/): I have already been a teacher in other subjects in my professional career and I came to know that teaching is one of the most mentally demanding and psychologically challenging jobs one can do. - [Economy, Tinder and Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/09/26/economy-tinder-and-tango/): Organizing events in Tango can be a very challenging task, especially when you try to keep role balance and ensure that the level of dancers will be good enough. But for local milongas, there are sometimes other motives for the organizers (see economical profit) to turn a blind eye to such phenomena. - [Dopamine and oxytocin](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/09/19/dopamine-and-oxytocin/): if you go into this, dancing the emotion, the risk of getting oxytocin instead of dopamin, is quite high. Enjoy it, but be aware you will fall in love, with your dance partner: the tango-love. Just enjoy it but don’t confuse it with real love. - [Englishman in New York](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/09/12/englishman-in-new-york/): I was an Englishman in New york... analyzing a song of a different period and genre with the tools I learned from my Tango journey so far! - [Maturity](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/09/05/maturity/): Empathy on this simple level can certainly make you a very good social dancer and moreover it will certainly help you enjoy so much more from your dance. It is a sign of maturity and respect to your partner who after all (being a professional dancer) could have easily denied your cabeseo. - [Counting the uncountable](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/08/29/counting-what-counts/): Expressing emotions is a purely subjective thing. Let's take for example love as an emotion and music as a medium/language to express it. To some people expressing their love with a tango song, might feel fitting but to others, it might be more fitting to express it with a rock ballad or a jazz song, or a piece of classical music! - [Are there really levels in Tango?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/08/22/are-there-really-levels-in-tango/): When you learn a language you take classes... learn vocabulary.... grammar... syntax... writing.... listening etc. As time goes by you learn more complex things... words.... grammatic phenomena etc. until you can say you mastered it. - [Makes sense?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/08/15/decisions-that-make-sense/): How can you make your decisions and opinions even better? Making them sensible. A song is a series of decisions... if you manage to connect them in a logical sequence the whole dance of the song will... make sense. For example, I know that Laurenz has a long variation at the end of "No me extranas". The same variation plays earlier in the song with a strong violin melody on top of it. So, how should I dance these two parts? I can focus on the melody when I hear it and then step on the rhythm at the end where there is no melody... or... I could dance the rhythm and ignore the melody in the first part and then replay the melody in the end when it does not exist by trying to step on it (keeping it in my mind). - [The most powerful Tango step](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/08/08/the-most-powerful-tango-step/): When you hug a person for a few seconds it's mostly natural. We all do this more or less with friends and relatives especially when you meet after a long time... right? Have you ever hugged somebody for more than 5 to 6 seconds? When was it? What happened after? I remember for example hugging or being hugged by relatives at funerals for so long. Usually, the hug lasts longer when one of the two needs some kind of healing... relief... comforting. If there is no reason then it feels awkward. One of the two will ask... "what's wrong?" after those 5-6 seconds. - [Can a song paralyze you?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/08/01/can-a-song-paralyze-you/): Moreover lyrics, and the story they tell, usually help in making the listener feel for the writer... we often empathize with them... we laugh... love... pain... get angry... express our happiness with them. One of the more impactful effects (I think) is when we somehow identify ourselves as the hero in a song. When you feel like the song could actually be written by you. Depending on the feeling expressed, this effect can be paralyzing. If it is for example a quite sad song, it can even make you cry right there. - [Why do more?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/07/25/respecting-the-song/): Similarly, another great song is Mensaje. The story has it that the song was written roughly by Enrique Discépolo who shortly after died. Cátulo Castillo who took the composition from Discépolo's wife, Tania, forgot about it. Until a night when, as he says, Discépolo visited him in his sleep and dictated to him the lyrics. The lyrics are actually a message for his wife to always be kind and good in her life. Reading the lyrics alone can bring you to tears... not to mention if you add the amazing music and its interpretation by Troilo. - [When the leader becomes a follower](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/07/18/when-the-leader-becomes-a-follower/): A long time ago, I read a blog post from Tangomentor where he was explaining among other things that the woman in the dancing couple is actually leading the emotion. He also used a famous quote from Cacho Dante "Guys to dance tango you need to listen to the heart of the woman." To be honest I thought it was just a nice way to say be respectful to your partner... or something similar. I never really manage to fully grasp it... in a tangible way... with a real-life experience. - [Are Tango DJs leaders or followers?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/07/11/the-djs-influence/): So here is the dilemma DJs face. Should they play what the community likes and wants or should they try to educate them with a variety of different orchestras? How much are the taste and the trends in a specific, mostly closed community influenced by the DJs of the community? - [If it's not messy... it's not worth it!](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/07/04/if-its-not-messy-its-not-worth-it/): Expressing emotions in dancing is a difficulty we have because as I also wrote there is a tendency from society to undervalue it and maybe sometimes see it as a weakness. However, it's the only way (IMHO) to enjoy your dance. - [Why is Pugliese hard to dance](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/06/27/why-is-pugliese-hard-to-dance/): I believe that, since Pugliese's music goes to the extreme, it requires you to go to the extreme too, to really enjoy him. His music doesn't ask.... it demands from you to open up your soul, rip your heart into pieces, and expose and present yourself to your partner in a way that makes you vulnerable. Then... when both of you really open up yourselves and trust each other not to hurt you (physically and emotionally) in those ten minutes of the tanda... then... and only then... you can really enjoy his music and your dance. - [A different way of learning Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/06/20/a-different-way-of-learning-tango/): In this post, I want to focus on the way we learn Tango. Usually, we are impressed by the shows... we go to a school and start learning steps, sequences, techniques, etc. Then, some of us who are lucky to encounter an inspiring teacher, start to get more into the music. - [The missing link](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/06/13/the-missing-link/): I often wonder what is the difference between a good tanda and a magical one. You know... the one that you don't ever forget. After the quote of El Flaco Dany in the comments of my previous post, I think I realized what it is. The second link of the chain he mentions. The heart. - [Rejections or losses?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/06/06/rejections-or-losses/): In our tango journeys, we often experience rejection. Dancers that we would like to dance with and never respond to our cabeceo... dancers who might have danced with them once and then they seem to constantly ignore us thereafter... and so many more stories of rejection. - [Music industry now and then](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/06/02/music-industry-now-and-then/): A few weeks ago I bumped into an article discussing a current phenomenon in the music industry. As it appears from different statistics people tend to prefer older music more than new (whereas new is the music released in the last 18 months). The article more or less suggested that this is a failure of the higher levels of the music industry to connect with the lower levels where actually the creation happens and really listen to what the people want. - [Mutual inspiration](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/25/mutual-inspiration/): Many times when I am complimented at the end of a tanda I respond with something like "It wasn't only me dancing... we both contributed to making this a nice tanda!", However, what I often fail to communicate accurately is that the better a partner is, the more I feel free to unlock and unfold what I can do. - [Tango is not just fun](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/22/tango-is-not-just-fun/): The actual difference is that fun is something that just makes you happy but entertainment is actually educating your spirit... your soul. All kinds of arts (theater, music, painting etc.) are actually considered entertainment to some degree because they aim to express ideas... make people think... feel... and ultimately educate their spirits. - [Au revoir](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/19/au-revoir/): In our lives, people come and go all the time. People we meet randomly in our everyday routines, colleagues, relatives, parents, friends, partners, all kinds of different relationships… close and not. Sometimes, separations are difficult… full of pain…. tears… broken hearts. Sometimes separations are easier… happier… joyful. Sometimes they are bittersweet… happy and sad at […] - [I love Pugliese!](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/16/i-love-pugliese/): From the moment I read that he operated the orchestra as a collective allowing and rewarding every member based on their contributions, I realized why it is so complex. It's like a discussion where you merge opinions on a subject from all different sides of the spectrum. That is why his pieces can sound so dramatic, powerful, even angry at times, and at the same time extremely soft, caressing, and soothing. - [The best compliment](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/14/the-best-compliment/): I wrote the other day about the last tandas and I don’t think I mentioned that for me telling someone “I think, this was my last tanda for tonight” is one of the best (if not the best) compliments. Your partner tells you that they feel so complete and happy for the night or the […] - [A last tanda to remember](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/11/a-last-tanda-to-remember/): A long time ago I wrote about the “last tanda”… not literally the last one, but the one you dance and you feel complete and ready to get back home in peace. A few days ago in a marathon, I bumped into a friend on the first night of the event, and when I ask […] - [Live means alive!](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/03/live-means-alive/): I recently had the opportunity to dance to two different orchestras playing live. After the long covid break, it felt like I’d never done it before. I was trying to think why it feels so much better when you dance to live music. After some thought, I realized that the solution to the mystery lies […] - [When DiSarli sounds like D'Arienzo](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/05/02/when-disarli-sounds-like-darienzo/): We danced a super nice tanda and she was complimenting me and how I evolved in my dancing. I returned the compliments since she has also evolved quite a lot since we both started dancing… and then she says… “Yes… this D’Arienzo Tanda was super!”… and I respond… “Actually… it was Di Sarli… but you […] - [Sharing sorrow and happiness](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/04/28/sharing-sorrow-and-happiness/): There is a Greek saying that describes this process quite accurately... "A shared happiness is growing to double and a shared sorrow is lowering to half.". So this conversation... this sharing of your feelings is actually softening your sorrow or doubling your happiness. - [Coexistence](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/04/18/coexistence/): So, apart from many other things... Tango and its evolution through time, managed to bridge somehow the gaps of social classes and bring together people under the umbrella of music and emotions communicated through it. That is, I guess, one more reason that makes it so universal! - [The inverted caveman roles](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/04/04/the-inverted-caveman-roles/): In one of the lessons in my first year, our teacher asked us the following question. "Take one of your friends that don't have a clue about Tango and let them see one random performance. Then ask them to tell you what they remember from it. What do you think they will answer?" - [Crazy censorship](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/29/crazy-censorship/): I was inspired to write a kind of political post connecting the history of tango and especially the censorship it has gone through from the oppressive regime of Peron. Today, sadly, we relive in the most horrible way, how such a madness of some politicians can drive even the whole planet to chaos. - [Dancing loudly to silent songs](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/20/dancing-loudly-to-silent-songs/): Personally, I find that even standing and breathing together in the embrace listening to Goyeneche's voice and Troilo's bandoneon is already powerful and overwhelming enough as an experience that any addition to this must be so delicate, simple, and quiet because otherwise, it will destroy the essence of the song. Rivero (who sang the song originally with Troilo) says that when he was singing the song live it was as if all the girls had stopped breathing. - [Who are they?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/17/who-are-they/): I had recently the opportunity to experience two very unique maestros (Godoy and Carlitos) dancing in a show and I was even more privileged to see them dancing socially in a normal milonga of the events they were attending. I have already written that seeing them perform live on stage is quite an impressive experience on its own. But seeing them dancing socially in a milonga was even more impressive and I would dare to say didactic. - [Shouting in a church](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/14/shouting-in-a-church/): If the people in the rhonda were a Tango orchestra these couples would be like a violin player trying to overshadow everyone else by constantly trying to play solos ignoring what is in the arrangement! Well... you might be the best violin in the world... but in an orchestra... as part of a group, you have a very specific role and very specific time to shine. If you constantly try to force yourself on others then you are constantly distracting them and in the end, you are fired. That's the same in the rhonda... you are distracting people trying to dance around you and in some milongas, you might end up thrown out of them. - [Imagine](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/09/imagine/): In a podcast some time ago… I have listened to the phrase that the world would be a much better place if all the people knew how to dance Tango. Well, it’s obviously an exaggeration, but these days I can’t help thinking how trivial differences that lead to wars become when we embrace each other. […] - [Paralyzed](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/03/02/paralyzed/): One of the comments in a recent Goodnight Tango post was that I could describe feelings with my words like a photographer captures a nice picture with his lens. Unfortunately, I can’t describe the feelings, the pain, the stress, the agony that some friends (many of them among my tango friends) are going through these […] - [The imitation game](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/02/26/the-imitation-game/): From the time we are born, we are taught to imitate and there are numerous examples of experiments that have already proven that when we join a larger group we tend to follow the example of the existing members just because mainly we are afraid of being rejected. - [Una vez](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/02/21/una-vez/): You don’t know her… she doesn’t know you… your eyes meet… you nod… she nods back and there you go… a new experience is being born for both of you. Sometimes this new experience is so powerful… so overwhelming… so unique… that even between songs you don’t want to break the embrace… you are not […] - [Making plans](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/02/10/making-plans/): "Do you have any plans when you go to a milonga?" ...she asked me on our way back home. "I found out that when I make plans... I don't usually enjoy the milonga... so I try not to make plans and just let myself open to surprises."... was my answer back then. - [Musicality: the opinion on music](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/02/08/musicality-the-opinion-on-music/): I never really thought about it this way until yesterday's post... but it totally makes sense!!! The more I think about my dancing before diving into musicality and after... the more I see examples of "subjects" that I have now certain "opinions" on. - [What is you focus?](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/02/07/what-is-you-focus/): I remember my teacher sometimes when he was watching us dancing before class and then commenting on all the wrong things we did technically when we were dancing. He sometimes seemed like he had an obsession with technique… and in some cases, I was thinking… well what’s the problem if you don’t do a perfect […] - [5 in 1](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/01/24/5-in-1/): In my previous post, I wrote how some tango songs seem to strike a perfect macaroon-like balance between different elements in their music and how this makes them irresistible! Extending this line of thought one could think the same about dancing. If a perfect song makes you want to listen to it again and again […] - [The addictive element in Tango music](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/01/22/the-addictive-element-in-tango/): A lot of people say that tango is an addiction and in a post some months ago I wrote about the variety of embraces that maybe makes it addictive as a dance. Recently, I was reading the book “Atomic habits” and in one of the chapters, the author was referring to how the food industry […] - [2021 in review](https://goodnighttango.com/2022/01/14/2021-in-review/): I wanted to post this before the end of 2021 as it is usually a time of retrospective. We usually look back on the year that is leaving and think about what went well and what was bad… what made us happy and what was sad. However, I wasn’t sure which song to attach to […] - [We survived](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/11/16/we-survived/): “We survived” she said, now that we managed to meet and dance again after almost 18 months. Survival… yes… we managed to survive so far in a very strange period and I can’t help thinking of the parallels with the era when tango really thrived. It is a strange coincidence… Tango really thrived in the […] - [The unconscious cabeceo](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/11/12/the-unconscious-cabeceo/): I have just finished a couple of nice tandas and went into my corner… having almost sunk myself in a large comfy couch. The new tanda starts and I am not really interested in dancing. Just scanned the area around me. In front of me… a group of ladies sitting around a table is talking […] - [Changing tastes](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/11/07/changing-tastes/): It was in my first months in Frankfurt and I visited a milonga where a DJ I never heard of before was playing. To my surprise a few days ago I met the DJ and danced with her in another milonga… but that’s another story. To be honest I hadn’t danced a lot that night. […] - [I am a snob dancer](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/11/01/i-am-a-snob-dancer/): “When I first saw you in milongas I thought you were arrogant… a snob” she said after having met with me and having already got to know me a bit better. I get it… most of the time when I am not dancing, I am sitting in a corner all alone… not talking to anyone… […] - [The heartbeat of syncopation](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/23/the-heartbeat-of-syncopation/): They say there is no Tango without syncopation… and they are right. One of the first things that hits you when you start listening to Tango is this strong pa-bam beat in different places of a song. Sometimes even chained one after the other and especially in moments that need to communicate and stress something […] - [The Greek Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/17/the-greek-tango/): “Where are you from?” she asks… “From Greece” I answer… “You Greeks… dance like you have music inside you. Do you have anything similar as music or dance?” she asks… and my mind races directly to my other favorite dance. Zeimpekiko. A dance that like Tango does not have sequences… does not have a choreography… […] - [My best photos](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/13/my-best-photos/): In most of my tango dancing photos I look so serious… maybe sad… like I’m in a funeral or something. I guess that’s the reason why I hardly find my face in photos from events like marathons etc. However, I recently saw a photo that really made my day. No, I was not smiling… not […] - [Returns](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/08/returns/): In my previous Goodnight Tango post, I have written about the verse-chorus pattern of songs and the similarities they bear with the typical story of a hero going on an adventure and getting back home changed. A very interesting and enjoyable discussion evolved between me, Nadine, Ramiro, and Kostas who at a point wrote that […] - [Adventures](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/05/adventures/): In one of my previous Goodnight Tango posts, a few weeks ago… I mentioned an old podcast I was listening to from Jordan B Peterson discussing with Samuel Andreyev who is a musician and composer about music. One of the really interesting points made in the discussion was that the type of songs with the […] - [Doing good and nothing more](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/10/01/doing-good-and-nothing-more/): Why do you dance Tango?… I once read a very interesting blog post on this question and till then the question is always on my mind. Of course, the answers differ from person to person but think about what makes you happier when you dance? What makes you feel this deep satisfaction and fulfillment when […] - [Taste is a matter of time](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/09/22/taste-is-a-matter-of-time/): “What is your favorite orchestra?” she asked… and it took me a few seconds to think about it. Finally, I ended up saying that I don’t have a specific favorite orchestra but this changes from time to time depending on my mood and current situation. I always thought that this is a stupid answer just […] - [Embracing the unexpected](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/08/24/embracing-the-unexpected/): We are dancing and suddenly she does a couple of more steps than I had expected. Not breaking the embrace… not getting out of rhythm or music… just a couple of notes more that she notices and emphasizes. I get what she noticed and let her know it was nice. When the song ends… she […] - [Surprise bridges](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/06/25/surprise-bridges/): When was the last time you experienced a small pleasant surprise? An almost forgotten melody played by a street musician while you walk by, a nice scenery while waiting for the bus or the train, a small kid smiling at you on the road, a smell of fresh bread walking out of a bakery… you […] - [Open air milongas](https://goodnighttango.com/2021/06/23/open-air-milongas/): Now that Corona seems to leave us and we return to some kind of normal we return also to dancing. Of course, some restrictions still apply and in many places, open-air practicas, milongas, and similar gatherings are organized in all kinds of locations. I was discussing the other day in one such open-air gathering with […] - [The whispering room](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/06/22/the-whispering-room/): Before you start… just a quick note. This is the third post in a longer seriesThe arguments unfold over time and are interconnected.Subscribing by email lets you follow it as intended. Subscirbe here A dream come true Have you ever thought you could have a tango event with perfect role balance and a ratio between men and women reaching close to 70% women and 30% men? That would have felt like a dream to organisers not long ago. Today, it is a possibility. In some communities, it might already be a reality. And we all seem to be happy with it. […] - [The ladder](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/06/15/the-ladder/): The comment section of my last post taught me something I hadn't fully seen when I was writing it. Several female leaders pushed back. Not on the conclusion, but on the framing. They pointed out that the advantages I described... the existing network, the lower intimidation threshold, the familiarity with the follower's experience... don't tell the whole story. Because behind those advantages is a struggle I hadn't made visible. Female leaders, especially in traditional milonga settings, are frequently invisible. Not because they aren't there. Because the room doesn't see them the same way it sees a male leader. The cabeceo that works for him doesn't always work for her. The invitation that lands for him gets missed or misread when it comes from her. In events where time is short and competition is high, that invisibility becomes urgent. - [Learned Helplessness](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/06/08/learned-helplessness/): Veronica Tumanova wrote about this recently in her first essay since the pandemic, and as usual, she is spot on. She makes the case that more women leading is good for everyone: for the followers who gain agency, for the economy of tango schools and festivals, and crucially, for the male leaders who will now face real competition and be pushed to improve. It's a generous argument, and most of it holds. But there is one question it doesn't ask. Not about the women. About the men. - [The perfect tanda was never the point](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/04/08/the-perfect-tanda-was-never-the-point/): What if we could remove friction altogether? From our dance… or even from our lives? Why do we need it in the first place? - [The gift of the wrong partner](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/03/23/the-gift-of-the-wrong-partner/): In a world that counts everything through performance... likes... followers... output... Tango pushes us to develop something else. Something that doesn't really fit into metrics. Presence. So if presence doesn't "pay"... why develop it at all? What is the value of it? - [Which mountain are you climbing?](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/03/09/which-mountain-are-you-climbing/): We believe that in Tango, as in many other activities, the higher you get, the lonelier it becomes. The better you dance, the fewer people you find to truly enjoy dancing with. So if improving means that fewer and fewer partners satisfy you… if you need those very few at “your level” to enjoy a tanda… What exactly are we climbing for? - [The excuse gap and the internal quiet](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/02/23/the-excuse-gap-and-the-internal-quiet/): In the last post, I wrote about the two different orientations of growth in Tango and the key differences between them. Especially in how they see the partner in the dance equation. The post finished with the following questions: If your growth orientation and intention are right, why does judgment remain? Why do good dancers still feel misunderstood? And if the judgment does not disappear, why choose the relational growth path at all? - [Your pleasure is not the goal](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/02/09/your-pleasure-is-not-the-goal/): If the goal of my dance is my enjoyment, what does this make the other person? Are they reduced to a variable in my pleasure... a means to my end? - [Your improvement doesn’t buy you freedom](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/01/26/your-improvement-doesnt-buy-you-freedom/): In my last post, I left you with a rhetorical question. Suppose you improved yourself to the maximum. Suppose you had perfect technique, an expanded vocabulary, and exceptional musicality. What would all that mean if you still couldn’t find a partner to share them with? The answer seems obvious. And yet, the question itself quietly challenges a deeply rooted belief: Better dances come simply from becoming better yourself. - [The false promise of self-improvement](https://goodnighttango.com/2026/01/12/the-false-promise-of-self-improvement/): Become the best version of yourself. Invest in yourself. You are your greatest asset. You don’t need anyone else to be whole. You have probably seen or heard these, or similar, motivational messages encouraging self-improvement. From physical to psychological and social aspects of life, there is no shortage of content pushing us to upgrade ourselves. - [It's not for the community we have...](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/12/29/its-not-for-the-community-we-have/): I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, but last year I actually made one. I told myself: “Let’s try to start a YouTube channel… something for new or future Tango dancers. Something that connects Tango life with real life.” - [It's not the steps you teach](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/12/22/its-not-the-steps-you-teach/): A few weeks ago, Dimitris wrote a post about tango teachers complaining that “the level of Tango is declining.” His point was simple: maybe teachers judge the level based on the events they attend. Events that are often poorly curated and therefore not representative of the wider tango community. - [It's not the dancers you see](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/12/08/its-not-the-dancers-you-see/): "We have a policy in our events,” he told me. “No stars. It creates the wrong dynamic.” I smiled happily, not because it was funny, but because I had written about exactly this years ago. And here it was: an organiser proudly standing by it. - [The broken pebble jar](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/11/17/the-broken-pebble-jar/): Tango is all about trust. We all know it. We open our embraces and let strangers in, expecting that they will not harm us physically or emotionally. This requires a great deal of trust. And the more we dance, the more we learn to trust... or distrust some partners. - [It's not the Tandas you dance](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/10/20/its-not-the-tandas-you-dance/): I’ll start with my unpopular opinion. I don’t like Biagi... Or Valses. (But strangely enough, I don’t mind a Vals by Biagi!) Usually, these are the moments I take a break in the milonga. Of course, there are exceptions, but that’s not the point. The real question is: how did I end up here? And how do we all, at some point, end up in similar situations? - [It's not the milongas you go to](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/10/13/its-not-the-milongas-you-go/): In my previous post, I talked about how absence creates or highlights presence. That was about three weeks ago. Yes. I took a break from writing (or at least from posting) for a while. But the idea behind this post has been waiting patiently for three years to take shape. So… what’s three more weeks, really? - [It's not the notes you dance](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/09/22/its-not-the-notes-you-dance/): It’s not the notes you play… it’s the notes you don’t play. At first glance, it sounds like a riddle. What could he mean? What are the notes you don’t play, and why should they matter? - [Old and new shadows](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/09/08/old-and-new-shadows/): In this post, I want to discuss… Shadows. Not the ones created by light hitting an object, but the ones we keep inside us. But before we go there, let’s start with a short quiz: What if a person is aggressive? Would you say aggressiveness is a good or a bad trait? Think about it for a minute… I’ll wait. - [Causation, Correlation, and the Dance Between Them](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/09/01/causation-correlation-and-the-dance-between-them/): In the first part of this little rabbit hole, we looked at how Tango has (thankfully) moved on from the days when your gender automatically decided your role. Back then, it was simple: man = leader, woman = follower. No questions asked. Today, that rulebook is gone, and we get to choose. And yet… the numbers still lean the same way. More men are leading. More women are following. - [Causation, correlation and the thing between your legs.](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/08/25/causation-correlation-and-the-thing-between-your-legs/): Whenever I post something that even remotely touches on gender and roles, there will always be at least one comment about how we should get rid of gender stereotypes in Tango and how it would be better if dance roles were not linked to gender at all. One of the most popular arguments is: “You cannot let what you have between your legs define the role you dance.” - [When bias is an advantage](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/08/18/when-bias-is-an-advantage/): When I wrote about how Tango could be advertised more effectively to men, some people commented that I was being “unbalanced” and that the real solution was for me to learn to follow and to propose teaching both roles from the start. - [The hidden opportunity in Tango marketing - part 3](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/08/11/the-hidden-opportunity-in-tango-marketing-part-3/): In my last post, I argued that Tango can give men a space to come together, side by side, and slowly build friendships, without pressure or pretence. Today, I want to go a little deeper. I want to explore how Tango can be presented in a way that speaks to men (and yes, probably to women too) by tapping into the same needs that have fueled one of the most controversial cultural movements of the past decade: the manosphere. I know… bold statement. But stick with me, there’s a logic behind it. - [The hidden opportunity in Tango marketing - part 2](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/08/04/the-hidden-opportunity-in-tango-marketing-part-2/): In the last post, I wrote about how Tango is a powerful antidote to modern loneliness. Especially in a post-COVID world where third spaces are vanishing, Tango offers us a lifeline... a regular, welcoming community you can return to again and again. But there’s another layer to this story. One that isn’t talked about much. The loneliness of men. - [The hidden opportunity in Tango marketing - part 1](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/07/28/the-hidden-opportunity-in-tango-marketing-part-1/): Some years ago, I wrote about the way Tango is advertised and how misleading and limiting that messaging can be. Since then, many things have happened, but I still stand by what I said. Advertising Tango as a dance of passion, drenched in sensual and sexual imagery, deprives it of a much greater potential impact in today’s world. But hey… I won’t tell you everything in the first paragraph. Stick around, this is going to be a long journey. A journey of different posts. - [The elephant in the room](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/07/21/the-elephant-in-the-room/): A few weeks ago, a video went viral in the Greek Tango community. Two women, both dancers, were repeating phrases they’ve heard over the years. Comments full of gender stereotypes, casual misogyny, and the kind of phrases that, when unpacked, reveal more than just ignorance. They reveal a culture that sometimes looks the other way. I applaud the initiative. We need to hear those words. Say them out loud. Hold them up and look at them. But at the same time, I also feel there is an elephant in the room that very few speak about. Something that can push the discussion one step further in a fruitful manner. - [Kindness, Rituals and Values](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/06/30/kindness-rituals-and-values/): Some weeks ago, we had a meaningful conversation in the community about the custom of walking your partner back to their seat after a tanda. One member challenged the gesture, suggesting it might symbolise outdated gender roles. Others, including myself, offered a different view. I don’t see this as a “ladies first” gesture. I see it as “kindness first”, or perhaps “couple first” gesture. It’s a shared closure to a shared experience. I’ve seen this happen even in same-gender tandas, and it never felt off. But it does feel off when a partner suddenly disappears into the crowd without a glance or a step together toward the edge. I always wonder: Did something go wrong? - [Leaving home](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/06/24/leaving-home/): I still remember the feeling of leaving my parents’ house and living alone at 18. Do you? I had spent time away from my parents before, but in most of those cases, I wasn’t truly on my own. There were always other people around in case I needed help. Living alone for the first time felt like a rite of passage. It was the first time I had to take care of myself and a household: cook, shop, manage my budget, pay bills... everything, by myself. - [Frodo, Sam and the power of Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/06/09/frodo-sam-and-the-power-of-tango/): In the last post, I described how the Ring from The Lord of the Rings can symbolise Tango’s power and how it amplifies what’s already inside us. I used the relationship between Gollum and the Ring to show how Tango (The Ring) can twist us when we dance to escape ourselves (like Gollum used the Ring). But not everyone who carries the Ring turns into Gollum. Some carry it like Frodo. And some… walk beside the ones who struggle, like Sam. - [The Ring, the Gollum and... your Tango!](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/06/02/the-ring-the-gollum-and-your-tango/): You’ve probably seen the “My Taaaango” T-shirts with Gollum clutching the Ring like it’s the most precious thing in the world. Did you find it funny? I hope so. But have you ever wondered what message it hides about how Tango, like the Ring in The Lord of the Rings, can take over your identity if you're not careful? How can it turn you from Sméagol to Gollum? Let me explain... - [But they dance...](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/05/26/but-they-dance/): I was in a milonga the other night, which wasn’t very full. The mood was flat. Adnd then came the first song of a Tanda—Cascabelito by Pugliese, with Maciel on vocals. Under different circumstances, my head would be spinning like a cartoon scanning the room to find a partner. This time, though, I wasn’t quite feeling it. So I stayed seated just to enjoy listening. The next song started. Corrientes y Esmeralda, same orchestra, but with Chanel on vocals. And my reaction changed entirely. I suddenly felt grateful I hadn’t gotten up to dance. Something felt off. Very off. - [Caveman mode ON!](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/05/19/caveman-mode-on/): "I feel that if I will ever dance with her, I need to be at my best." A friend of mine told me in a milonga some time ago. I’ve heard that thought before. Actually, I used to think that way too. In my first couple of years, whenever I was dancing with a better dancer, I would try to perform the latest sequence I learned in class to impress them. When I danced later on with another dancer during a conversation about trust... she told me... "Sometimes I feel like some men try to impress me when we dance together". I wanted so much to grab my friend and get him in front of her to say it to his face, but I couldn't. These conversations stayed with me. And they made me think... Why do so many men feel the need to impress their partners in the first place? - [Nobody's crazy... and alone](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/05/12/nobodys-crazy-and-alone/): TLDR: Today, I’m launching a new initiative: anonymous community surveys. The first one is about how we experience rejection in Tango. If you’ve ever felt confused, hurt, or unsure about being refused a dance, this is your chance to share your perspective. - [Dance like there is no... tomorrow](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/03/31/dance-like-there-is-no-tomorrow/): "It's such a pity that no one took a photo of me dancing with her." A friend told me about a memorable tanda he had. Just a few days ago, another friend posted a video of dancing with a well-known dancer that many consider a myth. Looking at photos and videos from events we joined and finding ourselves in them is indeed a kind of revival of those nice memories. - [Retention rates and "bad" milongas](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/03/10/retention-rates-and-bad-milongas/): In the previous post, I wrote about a friend comparing the vibe from two different milongas. I pointed out the behaviours of organisers that can create a "colder" vibe. Usually, such milongas attract and cater more to advanced dancers, and that is why the organisers have a judgemental mentality that discourages or puts off the more beginner dancers. I wrote what I wrote just as an explanation for why some things are the way they are, and I wrote them to point out how being judgemental as an organiser can hurt your milonga. But the biggest danger is not that. The biggest danger is that this judgment can lead to a competition which in the end will hurt those high-level milongas more. Why? How? Follow my thoughts. - [Why is your milonga so... "cold"?](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/03/03/why-is-your-milonga-so-cold/): "When I am in milonga A I feel like home but in milonga B I feel I need to be careful with each and every step I take... I feel like I am constantly under judgment." A friend of mine told me that comparing the vibe he gets between two different milongas in the city. He is not in the league of the best dancers. However, he enjoys Tango. He seems to be stuck with it as far as I can tell. For a long time, I was pondering on that statement. I do get a similar kind of difference between the vibes of different milongas within the same community. I couldn't point my finger at why this happens. I believe that the organisers set the tone in a milonga. But this is not enough. How does this happen practically? - [Why are you rich?](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/02/24/why-are-you-rich/): Bill Gates. You all know him. Right? However, did you know that in 1968 Bill Gates was one of the 300 students who attended the Lakeside School? Out of 18 million high school students who lived in the US (303 million worldwide), he had the luck to attend one of the few high schools that, at that time, had the combination of cash and foresight to buy a computer! At that time, that fact would have seemed insignificant. But in retrospect, think about the importance it played for his path. - [Inclusiveness intentions, actions and results.](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/02/17/inclusiveness-intentions-actions-and-results/): Lately, I see often in milongas, statements along the lines of "we are against discrimination based on gender, religion, colour etc.". I never really paid much attention. I found this a nice gesture. But recently I started questioning whether this is true or just a statement. Is it like the CO2 offset to improve an organiser's public image? Or is it actually true? - [Unknown or unseen?](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/02/10/unknown-or-unseen/): If you read this blog, you might think I am some kind of super-famous dancer. You might think I am known in milongas. You know... the kind of person who immediately attracts attention when he enters the space. The truth is that I am quite the opposite. Maybe, I became a little "famous" in the community in Frankfurt. People who read my posts and approached me to discuss them. However, in general, people don't know me. I don't make an effort to become known. I mean... I will never go to a milonga and introduce myself to the organisers like I am some kind of celebrity. I see my analytics and I know how "famous" or not I am. - [Are you a diamond or a bottle of water?](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/02/03/are-you-a-diamond-or-a-bottle-of-water/): Imagine that someone offers to give you for free a diamond or a bottle of water. Which one would you choose? I guess that most people reading this question would answer... "The diamond". If you compare the prices of the two goods, there is no doubt that diamonds cost more. That is why you would choose it. Now imagine you are in the desert without food or water for days. Suddenly, someone offers you the exact same thing. A bottle of water or a diamond. How about now? I guess you changed your mind. Right? There is an interesting paradox when it comes to the value of things. The paradox of value. The previous example shows that the value of a good can depend on a person's current condition. - [A Tanda away](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/01/27/a-tanda-away/): Let's do an exercise. Think about some of the strongest memories in your life so far. Just pick a few that come to mind. Done?... Now answer the following questions. Do these moments involve another person or were they moments that you were alone? Is there an emotion attached to those moments? - [The easiest kind of teacher on earth!](https://goodnighttango.com/2025/01/06/the-easiest-kind-of-teacher-on-earth/): I spent 10 years of my life teaching in various settings. I learned a lot about the skill of teaching and honestly, that is why I don't aspire to become a Tango teacher. Recently I discovered how much easier it can be to be a tango teacher. I had an exchange with a teacher and they told me that they would never tell their students "You have a problem with your dance" even if they asked them to. I have heard about such teachers in the past. Teachers who are sensitive about their students and how they will receive their feedback and in order to not hurt their students, try to land their feedback softly or sometimes they don't land it at all. They try to sugarcoat it or even omit it. - [Why am I doing this?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/12/20/why-am-i-doing-this/): "Thank you for doing this for the community" he told me referring to my blog posts. To be honest I didn't know how to react. All this started like a joke. I started by posting small texts on Facebook for my friends and as the discussions led to new texts and the new texts led to more discussions and longer texts, at some point, it evolved into this blog. So, I did not start all this for the community. I didn't actually care about the community. I only cared about my friends and keeping in touch with them during COVID. I never really thought I was contributing something to a community. - [Do I have it in me?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/12/02/do-i-have-it-in-me/): A few days ago Dimitris posted a text that was arguing that musicality is not something that you have intuitively but rather a skill that you learn. A friend of mine commented below that she believed that there is something in some people that makes them more musical than others. I argued that it is a learnable skill. But why do we often believe that some people are more musical by nature... Or intuitively? Is there such a thing? Is there such a thing as having a musical talent? - [Easy assumptions](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/11/18/easy-assumptions/): In one comment I received in a previous post one of the double role advocates was writing about all the different reasons why one should learn and dance both roles. In the end, she ended up saying that people who don't want to dance with same-gender people must have some insecurity about their sexuality. Strike 1. In another comment, another reader responding to the comment of another person was judging if he was homophobic or not based on his origin. The comment was something like "Oh you are from that place... No wonder you are homophobic." Strike 2. Another reader commented that he doesn't see any good female leaders and that they mostly don't know how to lead (based on his experience) only to be attacked later on by another person who assumed that he is some kind of sexual predator just by the placement of his hand on his profile photo! Strike 3. I could go on with more examples of such exchanges but I won't. I believe you see a common pattern here. People make assumptions about others based on irrelevant characteristics like for example, judging if someone is homophobic based on where they come from for example, or that they are sexual predators based on a random photo. - [The quality-quantity paradox](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/11/04/the-quality-quantity-paradox/): Last week I asked the blog readers community if they focus on having quantity or quality of tandas in their milonga experience. After gathering some answers a pattern started to emerge. People tend to focus on quantity in their first years and then on quality. To me, this makes perfect sense. Have a look at how babies behave. They experience the world with all their senses and often try to take whatever they find in front of them and taste it. They don't know what is edible or not, they don't know what is harmful and what is healthy. They don't know what tastes good and what tastes bad. You need to try and try again until you start developing a taste. Without tasting as much as possible you can't say if you like a specific food or not. - [It is a woman's world.](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/10/28/it-is-a-womans-world/): In a comment I received on my post about men in Tango, there was the suggestion that we don't have enough good leaders and that followers turning to leaders will increase competition between leaders pushing them to get better. In theory, this argument sounds perfect. Indeed. In a market with a small amount of suppliers introducing more suppliers will increase competition and consequently quality of the supply. But is it really working this way in practice? - [Tango and men in today's world](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/10/15/tango-and-men-in-todays-world/): I started those posts with one analyzing the power of men based on numbers. I continued on the theme of men possibly feeling disconnected and unnecessary in Tango communities, and I finished by discussing the names of roles and the idea of authenticity concerning dancing the opposite gender role. In my latest post, I tried to answer all those readers who might be jumping quickly to conclusions putting me in the box of toxic, anachronistic and old-fashioned men. Now we come full circle. In this post, I would like to conclude (at least for the time being) my thoughts on all this discussion on gender and role imbalance and close (hopefully) this series of posts with an idea for a way forward in our communities. - [A ridiculously biased, toxic man. Me!](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/09/30/a-ridiculously-biased-toxic-man-me/): What I consider normal is not necessarily normal for you and vice versa. Normal is just a construct of our minds. Actually there is not just one "normal", there are many "normals". Yours, mine, the guy who just found the post by accident, the lady's who is looking for a cheesecake recipe and found this post, etc. Given that, let's have a look at the reaction to my last post. - [Roles, identities and... the catch](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/09/23/roles-identities-and-the-catch/): In most of the comments and arguments about roles, the common denominator is that when we involve the genders people tend to forget that we are talking about roles and not about identities. Take for example any actor in any movie. Let's say Tom Hanks in the movie California. He played the role of a gay man. Is he really gay? As far as we know not! It is very easy when it comes to acting to understand the difference between acting and being. We never associate a role with the identity of an actor. - [Oscar awards and role names](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/09/16/oscar-awards-and-role-names/): After my last post, I had a fascinating discussion with the blog's community members that was really enlightening. The question was simple. Do you prefer the names leader and follower or man and woman when it comes to roles in Tango? To be honest, most of the following text was already written when I posted the question but I wanted to see if I was missing something in my logic and arguments below. So I started the discussion trying to see what people think about it. - [We need you](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/09/02/the-need-to-feel-needed/): I haven't seen her for some time but I assumed she was on vacation. It was summertime and I assumed our timings were a bit off so we hadn't seen each other for a couple of months or so. When I saw her, I asked how she was. What she told me was surprising. She had some doubts if she meant anything to the community and thought of taking a break to see if anyone would seek out her. She wanted to check if she was needed in some way in the community. - [Power games and a debunked theory](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/08/19/power-games-and-a-debunked-theory/): It all started with an excellent post by Oa Metzner in her Facebook profile. She described her experience so far in the role of leader and urged men to be careful with the power they have and how they use it. I reposted her text and I also followed the comments on her post. I had different discussions with friends and there are so many points to unpac from al this desiussion that one post is not enough. In this post I am going to explain how the gender imbalance creates a mismatch in communities and try to see how true is the argument that women have power to from a community through rejection. - [Are you an artist?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/08/05/are-you-an-artist/): A few days ago I asked the people in the blog's community (if you haven't joined yet... what are you waiting for?) to answer the following question. "Do you consider yourself an artist when you dance socially?" What followed were some really interesting discussions and in this post, I will try to summarize them as much as possible while providing also my own view. - [Stagnation](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/07/29/stagnation/): "When you started the blog... Did you know that you will have so many things to write about?" she asked me between songs. "No!" I answered and actually, I told her that there was once a period (when I was still posting these texts only to Facebook) when I decided to stop posting. I posted a text with a Cumparsita signalling the end of my posts. Months later I found myself having so much to write about and deciding to restart. - [Financial habits and finding teachers](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/07/22/financial-habits-and-finding-teachers/): In a previous post, I was writing about dancers who look poor or rich and how sometimes it's the dancers who look poor who are actually rich. ... What Robert mentioned in his response was that some fashion brands for rich people oftentimes have two different lines of products. In one of them, the company's logo is evident and even repeated in many places. Whoever buys those clothes definitely makes a statement of wealth. "I am wearing an Armani suit"... "I am carrying a Luis Vitton bag!". These items are not cheap by any means. They are expensive but they also target an audience that uses them as a statement. People buying them want the rest of us to know that they can afford to buy them. - [Women, sex and Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/07/09/women-sex-and-tango/): In my second most visited post for 2023 titled "Men, sex and Tango" I received a lot of comments that were "accusing" me of propagating a stereotype of sex-hungry men and that there are also women who misbehave and cross boundaries. In some comments, people even described personal experiences. I initially responded (and it was actually true) that I never intended to propagate any stereotype but the post came to me after a discussion I had. Somehow, I felt something wasn't addressed in its entirety. - [Classes? Me? Why?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/06/24/classes-me-why/): A few months ago I posted an article saying that I no longer care to take classes. The day the article was posted I signed up for a weekend of classes with Paula Tejeda and Lucas Carizio. Now you are wondering if I am a split personality or if I was just trolling you in my previous article. To be honest, I was also wondering myself. Would I take something from the class that would improve my dance radically? I wasn't expecting so. - [Why do you dance Tango?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/06/17/why-do-you-dance-tango/): Why should we wait for a few professionals to win their battle with the devil and get their performances promoting social tango? Also, a performance is never done in a social context. The floor is never crowded, you cannot see the respect to your fellow dancers, and you cannot see the social dimension of the dance if only one couple is dancing on the floor. Yelisaveta has a point. We can do it ourselves. The internet has democratized and provided access to so many things. Why not social Tango as well? - [A sweet fainting](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/06/17/a-sweet-fainting/): A story by Ramiro Villapadierna All too softly, the unknown tanguera seemed starting to somehow stretch each measure of the music, in a subtle but intense way, every step whimsically taking advantage of that distance that goes from her high-heel to her toe. The tango was entering a sweet languid slumber, increasingly dense and emotional. I let her do, and followed her, entering the slow trance. Sort of felt as if she was dragging the heavy bandoneón with her own feet. The beats lengthened apparently on their own as her waist swayed accordingly and each measure seemed to deconstruct itself, down to […] - [Poor looking rich dancers](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/06/03/poor-looking-rich-dancers/): In Greece, there is a saying that goes like this "You can't hide money, love and coughing!" The meaning is that like cough someone who is rich or in love cannot hide either of them with their behaviour.  Although I agree on love and cough lately I realized that money can be hidden. Actually, there are a lot of people who might be rich if you see their personal finances but they look like normal everyday people. They dress up casually, drive normal cars, live in the next-door house and go to work every morning like all of us. It is the concept of stealth wealth. Can it apply to Tango dancing? - [Charity or investment?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/05/27/charity-or-investment/): One of the doubts that came up in the discussion about trophy tandas was the doubt of the dancer who is receiving the trophy tanda whether the other dancer dances with them out of pity or obligation (naming it usually as charity tanda) or whether they really want to dance with them. - [When dreams come true](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/05/19/when-dreams-come-true/): It's not the first time I've listened to this. I have to admit that even the first time I had a trophy tanda I was stressed. Even to this day... after already having some experiences like... sometimes I do feel stressed... I feel my heart beating fast... my mind goes crazy... and this is when problems start. When you leave your mind to take over. No matter your level and experience, the dance with someone you look up to is always going to feel exciting and stressful at the same time. Whoever tells you the opposite is lying. - [Chasing trophy tandas](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/05/13/chasing-trophy-tandas/): "I made it."... they told me. "I danced with X."... mentioning a famous dancer and then we continued our discussion about how it felt etc. Oftentimes people tell me about how they danced with such and such a partner who is someone famous or a teacher or a prominent advanced dancer in some way. I understand that when you have a nice moment you want to share it. I actually encouraged people to share their inspiring stories. But somehow, I don't often tell such stories myself. - [Inspiring stories](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/05/06/inspiring-stories/): "You look so passionate when you talk about Tango!" a colleague of mine told me at a recent dinner with my team from work. Indeed, when I start speaking about Tango with a group of people who are not dancers I light up! You can see in my body language that I am excited about the topic. I love discussing it, making it relevant for them and trying to share with them my experiences. - [Is it a party or a war?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/04/29/is-it-a-party-or-a-war/): I had a discussion the other day with a relative of mine who just finished a school for tattoo artists. The discussion evolved around the meaning of having a tattoo and what if you don't like something after some time. In between other things, he mentioned something that struck me as quite interesting. A tattoo or any other piece of art doesn't have any meaning on its own. It is us that we assign a meaning to it. What he meant was that oftentimes art doesn't have a specific meaning but we connect it in our minds with something personal. - [How to create change](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/04/11/how-to-create-change/): Recently there was an article in Medium by a Zouk dancer who tried to get in a milonga in NY and felt the rejection and the disrespect (to say the least) of the dancers there. I also have discussed a lot over the few years of running this blog about similar issues and I have come to some conclusions. You cannot change people if they don't care to change. You cannot change people just because you like things differently. So to all these problems, there is no solution that involves change! - [Am I lazy?](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/04/08/am-i-lazy/): Recently, however, I bumped into a very interesting video exactly about all this industry of self-help and continuous never-ending self-improvement. One of the major points in this self-improvement mentality is that if you choose to follow it you are implicitly accepting that you need improvement. That you are not good enough. If you constantly see yourself as not good enough, you will constantly seek improvement. Granted, sometimes you will indeed see this improvement. But is it always necessary? Do you always need to improve? Why? For what reason? To be happier? To be more efficient at work? To be healthier? Aren't you already happy enough?... efficient enough?... healthy enough? - [Smart-asses and social intelligence](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/04/03/smart-asses-and-social-intelligence/): I was taking German classes for almost 3 years. During those 3 years of online classes, we got to meet in person 3 times. It was not for a lesson. It was just a social gathering. During class time our teacher would encourage us to speak and would often correct our pronunciation or grammar or any other problem he spotted. However, when we met in person he not even once corrected us. We were certainly making a lot of mistakes, and we were certainly struggling sometimes but he was there waiting and not even once correcting us. Instead, he would respond normally like when you have a normal conversation with a friend. Moreover, when we didn't understand something, he would just repeat it in simpler terms. - [Contagious harmony](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/03/25/contagious-harmony/): "I miss the harmony. Looking at the people dancing, I miss the harmony. It's like I see people fighting." She told me in the after-marathon milonga casually discussing her experience. I asked for more explanation but she couldn't really give me an example to understand what she meant. Sometimes it takes time to understand something. Two years later... A different dancer at the after-marathon party of the same marathon told me the exact same phrase. "There is no harmony. It feels like people are fighting.". That was strange. Kind of like a deja vu but with totally different people! - [Trust me... I am a professional](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/03/18/trust-me-i-am-a-professional/): For a long time, I was convinced. I thought, maybe they were right. Maybe I was too scared or too inexperienced. Recently, I visited an event again with some professionals behaving like that. Breaking rules, taking up too much space, changing lanes unpredictably etc. I can't say that 2 more years of experience changed a lot in my reaction. I was still distracted and concerned (even when I was just sitting outside) and the argument that they were professionals didn't seem to work. But why? Why do I still have the same reaction? - [Designers and DJs who want to stand out](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/03/11/designers-and-djs-who-want-to-stand-out/): Designers who want to differentiate themselves try to deviate from these patterns and often fall victim to what is called familiarity bias. If you put for example the contact information of a website on the bottom but in the middle left area people will take more time to find that information. If you do so because you think you need to differentiate from others then you may end up with a highly unusable site and frustrated visitors that leave and never come back. But don't worry. This is a blog about Tango so... Let's get to it. - [Precision, recall and musicality](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/03/04/precision-recall-and-musicality/): Frequently, in discussions with friends, they tell me that they like such and such dancers because they find them very musical. When I ask for more details on why they think so, they have a very hard time explaining what exactly it is that they do. The answer is usually quite vague... Something like... They dance with the music etc. If you would ask me some years ago, I would ask in the same way. Today I can articulate much better what exactly I like and what I don't in terms of musicality in a dancer. - [Data, distance and biases](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/02/26/data-distance-and-biases/): You can ask the participants of an event how was the event and you will possibly get a big spectrum of answers from amazing to awful! Why does this happen? Because we all have our own experiences and expectations. Some get to dance more than others... some get to enjoy the chatting more than the dancing .. some will even complain about the food. So the work of an organiser is really difficult. - [Guilts, ships and life routes](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/02/12/guilts-ships-and-life-routes/): Yes... I am guilty as charged. In my post, a couple of weeks ago about the "high stool" problem, I received some very interesting comments. In one of them, a reader commented that I was trying to invent a clever mechanism to get people on their guilt trip. I understand the point. I was judging some behavior and I was maybe making people feel guilty. - [True leaders](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/02/05/true-leaders/): My most visited post in 2023 had been triggered by a post of one of the major community leaders in Frankfurt. After a few weeks of my post, I saw a new one from the same person publicly accepting that he went too far in the previous post and that he shouldn't have done so. Some days after that one major point of friction in the community, the two simultaneous milongas on Sunday, was "magically" resolved when one of the two teams stepped back. The result is that all those weekend milongas are now fully packed and people enjoy them much more (at least I know I do so). - [The "high stool" problem](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/01/22/the-high-stool-problem/): In my last post, I wrote about the story of Charlemos. What I find really striking in this story is how the man being blind refuses to meet the girl on the other side of the line with the excuse of being blind. To me, this end seems like he thinks of himself as unworthy of meeting a potential partner not to mention being loved by someone. - [The biggest barrier to Tango!](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/01/22/the-biggest-barrier-to-tango/): The 3rd of December is the International Day for people with disabilities. A few days before that I had posted an article about technique and the obsession that sometimes we have with technique that takes away our focus from the real pleasure of the dance which is the communication of emotions. In one of the groups, I received a comment that you cannot do something without technique, and that you need to spend time and energy and you need to be in "good physical condition" to dance. The phrase "good physical condition" triggered my curiosity even more. What did they mean? I asked but my question was received as an attack and the conversation stopped abruptly by getting a response that I don't know what it is like to be in a wheelchair. - [Struggling with... noise](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/01/15/struggling-with-noise/): We had a very interesting conversation last week in the newly founded group about what is musicality. If you haven't yet joined, do so! I saw so many different responses but amongst them, there was almost always a common pattern. Most people agreed that at some level, musicality means being able to understand the different elements in the music and intentionally select one of them to dance to. Sounds easy... right? - [Tango is dead](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/01/08/tango-is-dead/): It's all about the language again. Yes. If we see Tango as a language, together with all the characteristics we use to describe its functions we should also examine its historical evolution. In particular if tango (as a language) is still alive or dead. Languages can die when the population that uses them is either eliminated (see genocides) or forced to learn another one. This is pretty much what happened to ancient Greek. With the evolution of the population in the area of Greece and the different stages it went through, the ancient Greek was slowly forced to die and not be used any more in everyday life. - [About last year](https://goodnighttango.com/2024/01/01/about-last-year/): Fast forward a few months later and I am at the best event I have attended so far in my tango journey. Another DJ starts a tanda with the same song. The introduction this time is a sign for me to move as quickly as possible and find a partner. This time, although people are still puzzled and reluctant... I don't care. I do my cabeceo as fast as possible and we are on the floor with some more couples while many others still wonder what they are listening to. - [Do it like kids](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/12/18/do-it-like-kids/): I visited a friend's house the other day. They have two adorable kids and we were playing with them all the time. It is impressive how a couple of game hours with kids can totally change your mood. For better or for worse. I mean you leave the house full of smiles or with a headache from the cries. In any case, you are overwhelmed. But how does this happen? I mean how can you feel so happy after some time with children even if they don't speak and even if you can't have a super impressive conversation with them? I never really made the connection until recently. - [Presence: The key to get connected](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/12/10/presence-the-secret-to-get-connected/): You can easily understand when your partner is distracted. Even worse when they are totally absent. If they intentionally choose not to follow something and suggest something else they would immediately follow up with their idea and I would try to tune in. You understand that they are there and make choices. But if there is no follow-up because they are waiting for my next move, then we are disconnected. We could as well dance alone. - [The beauty and the beast](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/12/03/the-beauty-and-the-beast/): They aim also to make us look nice when we dance. Improve the aesthetics of our dance. You probably admire those dancers on the floor with nice posture and clean, straight lines when they move. So the question that always bothered me is how much of this technique is functionally necessary and how much is only for aesthetic reasons? I mean how good should my posture and lines be to avoid pain and discomfort when I dance? And finally, what if looking good is not always a thing you should strive for in Tango? - [Emotional technique](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/11/27/emotional-technique/): There is often an impression that technique is kind of the opposite of emotions, or that it hinders you from expressing emotions. Some weeks ago I saw a question about it on a Facebook group. Many people agree that technique is a tool to dance better, therefore communicate better and consequently express emotions. So the better your technique is, the better you express your emotions. So then... why do people believe that technique could be hindering the expression of emotions? - [Metaphorically dancing...](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/11/20/metaphorically-dancing/): I have never really thought about the connection that metaphors can have with dancing. You can actually dance a melody literally or metaphorically. It dawned on me the other day. I was on a musicality workshop about counter melodies with Horacio Godoy and at some point he told the phrase... "you can do something metaphorical" (speaking about dancing to a counter-melody) and they demonstrated what they meant with Maricel the second after. - [Perpetual beginners and useless teachers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/11/13/teaching-and-learning/): In one of my previous posts about the lost beginners, a reader of the blog shared it with a phrase he remembers his teacher telling him. "This is a perpetual beginner..." he said. The discussion that followed was a very interesting and enlightening one and it went in the direction of whose fault and responsibility it is to inspire and transfer knowledge in order to expand Tango. On one side a friend supported that it is the students' responsibility to learn what they are taught and on the other hand, I supported that it is the teacher that should be responsible for transmitting the knowledge effectively. I turned the question in my head for a long time and I think I finally have an answer. - [My tango home](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/11/06/my-tango-home/): "Are you dancing in Germany?". That's a question I often get when I am back in Greece and visit milongas. My answer is usually "Yes... even more than here!". Recently a guy I know in Greece was asking me how is the community in Germany and how is the Tango scene there. I responded by saying that I like very much the community in Frankfurt. More than the one in Thessaloniki now for many different reasons. - [Selfdriven followers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/10/30/musicality-independence/): When I was in Greece I had to drive myself every morning to the office and this drove me crazy. I always dreamed of having a fully autonomous car that would just get me to wherever I wanted while I could be sleeping, reading, etc. What does this have to do with trust and musicality? Well... hop on and let's go for a ride. - [Returning home](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/10/24/home/): A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit a milonga in my hometown. I was born and lived till I was 18 in a small town called Xanthi in Greece. The old town of Xanthi is a very picturesque and lovely place that I keep dear in my heart because these are the streets I grew up in - [A game with no winners or losers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/10/16/a-game-with-no-winners-or-losers/): Have you ever noticed that dancers who emphasize musicality tend to enjoy their dances more than others? Regardless of their partner, it seems like they are most of the time happy. I have observed that in myself as well. From the moment I focused on developing my musicality I was getting more joy out of my dance. - [Apples, oranges and human brains](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/10/09/stereotypes/): The training required for a human brain to recognize the pattern of an orange, apple, or any other object for that matter is really minimal. Sometimes you don't even need the visual stimuli but only a verbal description of the object can be enough to train your brain to identify those objects. But this pattern recognition is not always producing the best results. - [The lost beginners](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/10/03/the-lost-beginners/): You have danced with the best dancers in it and people admire you when they see you on the floor. You know that although you can have fun with your old classmate it will not look as good as when you dance with the elite. So what do you do? Would you continue dancing with them in the milongas whenever they come or would you not sacrifice the image you have now built to dance with a lower-level dancer? - [Tango addicts and dealers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/09/25/addicts-and-drug-dealers/): If we, as dancers, are addicts, this makes the event organizers our "drug" dealers... our Tango-drug dealers. Especially the ones in our local community. They organize events where we can get our dose of Tandas. When there is a market opportunity, for example, an area or a time slot where there is no event some Tango-drug dealer will sooner or later emerge, see it, and try to grasp it. This is how markets work. - [Men, sex and Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/09/18/men-sex-and-tango/): A common misconception as already mentioned is that people who dance Tango, do so because they are trying to find a love partner. Even worse some men might think it's a nice opportunity to hook up with lots of women and spice up their sex life. I already wrote that these misconceptions often lead to getting disappointed and quitting. In worse cases, they end up with men misbehaving in milongas thinking this is the right context for sexually harassing or attacking women. - [Fear of honesty](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/09/11/fear-of-honesty/): Let's play a game here. Let's say you dance a super nice tanda with partner A and at the end of it she hugs you almost reluctantly and says thank you. Now let's say you have partner B and you dance an equally super nice tanda. In the end, they stay in the embrace and give you a deep warm hug... after a few breaths together they leave you and tell you once more thank you with a deep smile that reaches their eyes. Which partner would you say fits the profile of a Greek and which of a German? - [The tango vocabulary illusion](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/09/04/the-tango-vocabulary-illusion/): On all this analysis I was struggling to figure out, how on earth can you get away with a limited vocabulary and still manage to have interesting if not mind and soul-blowing conversations. I mean... I manage to have dances that blow my mind and my soul without the knowledge of the whole vocabulary. Is it that my conversations are like chitchat? Am I that shallow? Or is it something else I miss? A few weeks ago it dawned on me on my way to a milonga. - [Finding your own Tango](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/08/28/finding-your-own-tango/): Dancers who really stay memorable when you dance with them, do so because they manage to express and evoke emotions. The easy part is to be happy, express joy, love, and affection. But is this our whole self? The hard part is to be able to express pain, hurt, sadness, despair, anger, and all those dark emotions we are often told to keep inside us and never express. - [Promotions and responsibilities](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/08/21/promotions-and-responsibilities/): Some advanced dancers will tell you that they don't want to take on more responsibilities in their lives. They come to Tango to enjoy and have fun. They already have a lot of responsibilities in their lives and don't want Tango to add more to them. Like the responsibility that is asked is something huge! I can see where this comes from but in the end it's like I listen to a parent saying "I wanted to have children but I don't like the responsibilities which come with it" or an employee saying "Yes... I would gladly take a new position... but I don't want to be responsible for the department I will lead". Does it make sense to you? - [Raising Tango babies](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/08/14/raising-tango-babies/): I often hear from seasoned dancers "I am not going to dance with beginners or generally people who are not at my level because... I want to have fun in the milonga... because rejection will make beginners stronger... they will build character... learn to work to reach me..."... the list can go on forever. So if in a tango community, the experienced members are supposed to educate somehow the newer ones, these statements seem to me equal to the following behavior. Instead of providing a wide variety of stimuli... like tastes, smells, images, people, languages, etc. to your baby, you just allow them to eat only fruits, smell only the range of smells inside a house... see only faces of your larger family group... listen to only the same language you speak. - [Self taught Tango toddlers](https://goodnighttango.com/2023/08/07/self-taught-tango-toddlers/): How about you? Do you have more practicas or classes in your community? Have you ever encountered a teacher that managed to excite your imagination and curiosity? Do you think that practicas are as important (or even more so) than classes or not? Let me know in a comment or with a personal message (email or Facebook) if you want to avoid publicity lights. ## Pages - [Goodnight Tango Surveys](https://goodnighttango.com/goodnight-tango-surveys/): Season 1: Rejections in Tango. - [Shop-list](https://goodnighttango.com/shop-list/): Miles Davis x Goodnight Tango “It’s not the notes you dance, it’s the notes you don’t dance.” A collection… ✔ Available in multiple styles.
