Tonight’s Goodnight Tango… comes after a request from a friend who sometimes acts as a Tango DJ. It also comes with a performance just because some of my non-tango friends need to understand that this IS tango… it is danceable… and yes… we DO dance it!
It was only a few months ago in the North Greece Tango Marathon. The DJ started what seemed to be a typical milonga tanda. For some reason, I joined the tanda on the second song (usually you have only three milongas in a tanda)… but… the DJ had a surprise. A fourth song…. and yes this was it! Needless to say that we were out of breath after it… but so so so happy that we made it… and I was thankful that for this unknown reason I joined the tanda only of the second song! Needless also to say that the DJ got a standing ovation from all of us.
One of the things we sometimes take for granted in a milonga is the communication of the DJ with the dancers on the dancefloor. The atmosphere they build… the way they connect the music with the venue… the time of the day… the people and the atmosphere in the place. Some people just have a charisma… some others are trying… but it’s so hard… and many of them are not professionals on this… so yes… whenever possible… let’s show our appreciation, with a nod, a thumbs up, a thank you, a congratulations on the music… whatever you feel like… because they are also a major part of the magic we all live in a milonga.
